Paying it Forward

A personal story for our What did we learn this week:

This past week I was at work doing my thing and this man came up to the bar. Immediately, I asked him what I could get for him and he replied with “I’m just waiting to pay, and how is your night going?” I then started to tell him about how dead it had been. He finished his transaction with his waitress and proceeded to walk away.

Almost immediately he returned and upon his return I noticed a $20 bill that he had slipped under my wine opener. I looked at him and said “Sir, you don’t have to do that!” he said “let me tell you this story” :

I was in Texas at my daughters graduation from a rehab center and I took her and about 30+ other people out to eat. The bill couldn’t of been cheap, I want to say around $1800 at least. I asked for the bill and the waitress told me that it had been taken care of, needless to say I was shocked! I found out that the man sitting in the booth alone on the other side of the restaurant had paid our bill. We were told that his daughter had also attended the same rehab that my daughter had. However, she was later killed by a drunk driver, and he came into this restaurant everyday and ate alone.

As chills ran across my body I kept my eyes locked with this mans while he finished his story. He said ever since that day every time he comes into this restaurant he likes to give something back in memory of what that nice stranger did for him. Paying it forward.

I was SO touched by this story, and he taught me a lesson too. That man gave me a $20 bill and I didn’t even serve him a drink.. just to do what he felt was right. Take a lesson from this story and pay it forward every now and then. Not only will it make you feel good it will make that person feel even better.

It’s the little things in life that make the biggest difference!

Empathy

Hey Betties and Bobbies,

This is my first official entry as a Bobby, so here is a little back story into my work profile. I went to school for Fashion Design. I know.. hold your “what a typical bobby” scoff, until I finish. My mom passed away while I was attending school, so I never ended up finishing. I had this whole late teens/early 20’s crisis, and decided that it wasn’t for me. That is when I settled to work in the hospitality industry. I am, by no means, turning my nose up at ANY position in this field. In all of my experience, they literally are the hardest working people. Even if someone says “it’s the easiest job in the world”. Yeah, okay. It’s easy. However, there is far more to it than meets the eye.

Though I now have a career in the fashion industry, I still continue to bartend and serve because the people I work with, and work for are amazing. I have been there for 6 years, and they have literally become my family. I have seen so many people, come and go. ‘This one is a teacher, this one is a nurse, this one is a doctor’ so please be mindful of “the bitch who didn’t bring you a diet coke” or “the asshole who forgot your ranch dressing.” As I said before, yes, some may say it’s the easiest job but just like everyone else in the world, they are people too. You don’t know what is going on behind the scenes in the life of your server/bartender/hostess.
Yes, some will say, when you walk in the doors, your personal issues stay outside. THAT IS NEVER THE CASE AND YOU KNOW IT. That has to be some Jedi mind trick that no one has ever taught me, and I don’t believe it’s true. Do I put on a fake smile sometimes? Absolutely. Will I ever be rude to a customer because I’m having a bad day/week/month? Never. However, if you don’t treat me like a human being, I’m certainly not going to give you the same respect. So, the next time you say to yourself, “Wow, this service sucks”, take a different approach. That normal protocol of not tipping or asking to speak to the manager, because option A.) you just made that server pay for your meal or option B.) you potentially just got that person fired from a minimum wage job. If someone came into your job, wherever it may be and was rude to you, what would you do?

19890000_empathy_b

The point I’m trying to make here is all about: EMPATHY. This is totally not a religious, Jesus, rant. It’s about treating others with respect, WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. No matter what, the common denominator is that we are all made of skin, bones, and blood. We all have a brain, and just because you have the time to go sit at a restaurant, does not make you any more superior than the person serving you your food and drinks. Just keep that in mind the next time you go out for dinner, or have a Betties night out. That girl serving you, and your Betties cosmos, COULD BE WITH HER BETTIES, having cosmos, but instead she is there taking care of YOU. Take the time to realize that and treat her right.)

Bobby

OK, Betties it’s our favorite time of the year! Not only because of the Holidays but because once Thanksgiving comes, it’s shop-til-you-drop time.

A Quick Favor

Hello All!

We just wanted to send you all a quick message asking for a huge favor. We work hard everyday on this blog to get our content available to everyone we possibly can. The great thing about blogs is that everyone can read them and if they care enough about what they have just read they will probably pass it along.

We know that when we read content on the web we share it with each other, our friends and our family. We ask that if you come across this post check out our full site and if you like what you see follow us! If you don’t (and that’s OK) maybe you know someone else who would like our stuff, pass it along. The more people we reach the better. Not because we’re trying to get this blog famous (though that would be ah-maaaay-zing!) we hope some of our posts help people. These Betties were born to help!

Www.theultimatebetty.com , were also on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest, just search The Ultimate Betty or The Ult Betty.
Thanks again to all of you who do follow us, comment on or like our posts. It means a lot more to us than you probably realize.

Dear Betty…

Dear Betty….

People say I look 10 years younger than I am.  That’s nice and no problem to hear that, but I feel guilty that I do absolutely nothing to keep it nice looking.  Some day my good skin genes from my dad’s side are gonna show me up for my real age.  Funny story:  I went in to Macy’s to the Clinique counter once and got a makeover, and the young girl asked me what my cleansing and moisturizing routine was (trying to choose the right formula for me).   I said  ”Actually, nothing,” and she accused me of lying to her!  :)

Now that my wedding is one month away, I want to know what you would advise on:  how does a person get a beauty routine down so that she does it day after day, night after night, without a second thought?  For me, it’s like pulling teeth.  In fact, I floss my teeth everyday, and I know a lot of people don’t.  So, I have the opposite problem.

Would you care to share with us what each of you do for your face care, please?  Oh, also, I am drinking lots of water to keep my skin beautiful.  :)

Thank you Betties!

Introducing: Dear Betty…

We have an exciting new addition to our site, Betties.

We’ve come across so many people asking questions on how we got started, who we are, or simply want our advice through comments. We’re not going to lie; going through comments and trying to figure out if they are spam or not is a timely matter. We decided it would be best to start a forum for all you Betties out there. We love hearing your input, but even more than that, we LOVE our followers and want to help you out in any way possible.

This will be completely anonymous, don’t worry! We are aware that there are topics you can’t go to your friends about. It’s no reason to end a friendship over. Simply go to our ‘Dear Betty…’ tab next to our ‘About Us’ section and VENT away. We will receive your comments through our blog e-mail (which we check multiple times a day).

Seriously, Betties. ANYTHING you want to discuss. Fashion, relationships, personal issues, suggestions about our site, recommendations for improvement, or just to chat. If there is any topic you wouldn’t want us to post on the site; please voice that in your comment to us. The last thing we want to do is embarrass anyone (even though it will be anonymous). We’re on YOUR side!

We hope to hear from you all!

Movember

Ladies, it’s that time of year again…. I know you are all thinking ‘Chanel, Burberry, and Givenchy‘ fall/winter line. Duh! Unfortunately, that is not what we mean.

No-Shave November is upon us.

You know, the time of year with our boyfriends ‘bro’ out with their other friends to see who can grow the more manly beard. We’re aware that this was originally started for a purpose. A great purpose actually. ‘Movember‘ was created to spread awareness to other men about prostate cancer. If only  men could broadcast the reasoning behind it more often. Instead, they post Facebook status updates and post Instagram pictures of their ever-growing bush on their face. Other dudes comment, “patchy brah”, “apparently you didn’t see your missed call from puberty ha”, or “weaksauce”. They revert back to their awkward thirteen year old self.

The funniest part of all is if a woman EVER said to a man, “It’s ‘No-Shave November Babe! Looks like I can throw away my razor! Tehehe” We would all be wondering this earth single, miserable, and worst of all…. HAIRY.

While a man who can grow facial hair is extremely sexy; it can get aggravating real quick. The rug-burn like kisses. Tickling sensation on your neck when they are being cute and brush up next to you. The constant scratching of their face. Keep calm. If growing a beard, drinking a Heineken, and watching NFL with their friends keeps them happy. Let it happen. In the meantime, you all can go rack up the AMEX at Chanel, Burberry, Versace, Givenchy, and wherever your heart desires. By the time they notice the bill, you will have paid it off and will snap necks until the snow melts off the ground.

Betty Law #2: The Law of Love

We have been taught at a young age about love. What exactly is love? It’s defined as an intense feeling of deep affection. You know that similar feeling you get when you opened the box to your brand new Givenchy purse! Ah-ha! That feeling! However, as a TRUE Betty, abiding by the Law of Love goes much further.

Giving is the ultimate act of love. We should never expect anything in return. In fact, the reward of helping someone will always be better than any amount of money they can repay you. There are many ways to “give back” as we discussed in a previous post you can write cards to kids. Help a neighbor. Go out of your way to be kind.

Before house music became mainstream festivals such as TAO (Together As One) were an outlet to be surrounded with positive vibes and non-judgment. Obviously, the true PLUR bunnies still attend for this reason not just because bouncing around to Swedish House Mafia is trendy. If you research Buddhism or Hinduism, that’s exactly what we are; ONE. There is no such thing as race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. Before you spit out some bratty comment about a girl and her hideous outfit, remember we’re all one. We all struggle daily with our own insecurities and trials. Everyone is fighting a hard battle. Stop judging and open your mind.

Pretty self-explanatory quote. Bravo, Buddha! If we can’t learn to love ourselves for everything we are; the good, the bad, and the ugly then we can never fully achieve the law of love. I don’t mean to go all Dr. Phil on you, but it’s just the way it is, Betties! Learn to love yourself; inside and out and the rest will come easy!

Southwest Eating: Fresh&Easy Vs MyFitFoods

This weekly comparison is for all you Southwest Betties!

Often times, we go through our busy day and forget to eat. Unless we have the occasional lunch meeting. Otherwise, we try to cram in whatever we can to give our body fuel to continue our day. Our choices aren’t always the best when this happens.

This weeks comparison is Fresh&Easy vs MyFitFoods. Both establishments have the same concept. Although, Fresh & Easy caters more to grocery shopping, they do have lunch specials “To Go”. Each place wants to create a feel of convenience that’s a healthier choice for you then stopping at a Fast Food chain.

We compared their ‘Chicken Enchilida Lunch Special’

Image

As you all can see from the Nutritional Facts, this is a great choice. Fresh&Easy does use pretty natural ingredients. Pop it in your microwave for about 90 seconds and you have yourself a decent lunch. This contains MilkWheat and Soy.

This meal is definitely better than going to a Mexican restaurant and eating their Enchilidas that are high in Fat and Calories. It’s pretty tasty but I felt lethargic and heavy after eating it.

I was apprehensive about eating another Chicken Enchilida meal from MyFitFoods. I was expecting to have the same experience from Fresh&Easy.

MyFitFoods is fairly new to the Westcoast. You walk in and it’s very small. To the left, you have the cashier stations and the right you see the frozen section of Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. Pretty simple right? Almost too simple to the point you feel skeptical. How could anything GOOD be that SIMPLE?

Image

If you are only looking at the Nutritional Facts, you are probably leaning more towards ^ MyFitFoods. The calories are lowered by 70 and the protein is up by 8 grams. Personally, Us Betties enjoy 40/40/20 when it comes to healthy meals. This contains Milk & Nuts.

Skeptical to try, I placed this meal in my microwave for 90 seconds. Immediately, the smell seemed more fresh and healthy. I added a little hot sauce to one and left the other plain. I wanted to see if it needed spice because I had the feeling it would taste too bland. I was WRONG. The meal actually tasted perfect without any hot sauce. To say this meal was life changing might sound over-the-top. It truly was the best frozen food experience I’ve ever had. It left me feeling full, energized, and satisfied.

What you see is what you get with MyFitFoods. The ingredients are pretty straight forward across the board. This is a meal you could make at home! The greatest part of all is how convenient it is. If you don’t have time to whip this meal up because you’re a hardworking Betty – find a MyFitFoods and leave your worries at the door.

Please research each place. I’m convinced that MyFitFoods will be popping up all over the place. A fabulous concept. Bravo Guys!!!

Never feel that you have to settle for something greasy because it’s quick. There are healthy choices all around us!

Restaurant Etiquette 101

Something every Betty should know!

Going out to dinner could be the highlight of your week or it could be as frequent as an every night occasion, either way this is something to pay attention to. With more than six years in the restaurant world (yes, it’s basically a new planet) these are the most important findings we have found. Following is a list of how you, the customer and the Betty, should properly act. Take note.

1. Here is probably the most important rule to live by, whether it pertains to your experience in a restaurant or in your everyday life: do not be rude. do not be rude. do not be rude. Yes, we are here to serve you and make it a wonderful experience but we are also human beings, with feelings. Barking your orders and being demanding is not going to get you any food any faster, we promise.
2. TIP YOUR SERVER!!! We work on other people’s graciousness. Yes, we get a weekly check but it is nothing, it is taxed and then it is based on the amount of tips we have to declare each day. Seriously, if you do not have the money to leave more than $4 on a $40 check, go to a fast-food restaurant or even to take-away at the place of your choice. It’s not fair to us, the servers. After all is said and done we don’t even get that whole $4.
3. Kindly ask for everything you may need in one visit, whatever visit that may be. For example, Tina wants another coke, and when we bring Tina that coke than Bob asks for a refill on his strawberry lemonade and so on and so forth. Think about that, if you hear someone asking for something, ask too! After a party of 5 or 6 does that, it can get a little frustrating. We understand you need things to enjoy your meal but believe it or not you are not our only table, especially on a busy night. If you do not see us constantly or at another table around yours taking an order, it is most likely because we are helping out in the back, running food or restocking dishes. Just like your job we have to multitask, we are not ignoring you and the fact that you need another napkin because yours fell under the table.
4. I am sure this is going to be a shocker, brace yourself…most of us under the age of 30 have college degrees. Trust, we do not want to do this for the rest of our lives. Please keep your judgements to a minimum.
5. The rule of separate checks: if you are bringing in a party of 8 and you all want separate checks but don’t tell us until we bring you the normal check, that is just evil. It is a very tedious process. Like previously mentioned in rule 3, we are doing other things for other people to ensure they have a great experience. Please, if you want separate checks state that in the very beginning!

Last but not least, be friendly to your server. Not just because we deal with your food but because it is SO nice to come in contact with friendly, understanding people. When you have already had a night of angry-never-going-to-be-satisfied people who complain about every little thing; taking an order from someone who can be patient is quite lovely!

Just a little something that we believe every Betty can learn from and hopefully help spread around to make the restaurant world, a much better one!

As Always Stay Classy,
